Fiction: What About Sammy?

Paperback
“I had to fix my lipstick, he was looking for a towel or something, and we had a little conversation. That a crime?”
        “I guess not.”
Silence. In the light they were closer than she thought. He looked into her eyes, trying to read her.
“Linsey, I thought about what you said last week,” he told her. “You were right. We really should drop this whole thing.”
        “What whole thing?”
“You know, letting him get in our way and stuff.”
Linsey couldn’t believe her ears. It sounded like TJ was about to say something big.
“Get in our way?” she asked. “We have a way?”
“I know you know what I’m talking about.”
She didn’t answer him. Instead she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek. He hugged her back, turned his head and kissed her lips. He felt so good to her, like a miracle. What she’d said to him last week had actually left an impression.
He started confessing things to her then, like how he thought about her all the time, everyday, how he wished she’d never been Steel’s girlfriend, but his. He told her that he’d wanted to kiss her for months now. Linsey could almost believe him until she remembered who he’d come with tonight.
        “What about Sammy?” she asked.
        “What about her?”
“She’s always all over you,” Linsey said. “You came here with her tonight.”
        “So?”
“So? So.” She wasn’t going to be used.  She didn’t need his lies. If he’d really cared about her ever since that night, then the least he could do was give her a straight answer regarding the freshman whore.
“You’re too much you know that. I’m not doing this.”
Linsey flicked off the vanity light and left TJ alone in the dark.
