Fiction: Her Daughter In Hot Pink

Paperback, 130 pages
Michelle returned to the kitchen to retrieve the three glasses of orange juice she’d poured. She knew the memory of this breakfast, of her and Kevin’s closeness, and the late-summer morning would stay with Grace for a long time. And, she knew there would only be more memories to come.
When she got inside Michelle caught sight of Kevin turning the corner of the hall into the kitchen, their daughter in his arms. He carried Grace high upon his side so that his arms wrapped behind her knees and he had to look up to her when he spoke.
The image of her daughter in hot pink pajamas, her arms around her father’s neck, their shared smiles and matching dimples made Michelle happier than she could ever remember being in her life. Kevin walked toward her, and Grace leaned down to kiss her good morning.
        “Morning Mommy!” she squealed.
“Well, hello Sunshine,” Michelle returned. “Are you all brushed up?”
        “Yup!” Grace nodded.
Kevin tickled at her. “Are you ready for breakfast?” he asked.
“Yes, Daddy,” she replied through her giggles. Grace squirmed, delighted as Kevin carried her onto the patio.
Michelle followed them out, glasses of juice in hand.
