She leaned forward and embraced the woman she’d once considered her best friend. Michelle’s body went stiff, and Brenda knew she didn’t need to hold her close for much longer to make her uncomfortable.
“How are you?” she asked. Brenda didn’t wait for a reply, but quickly turned her attention to Michelle’s daughter. “Is this your little one?”
She squatted down onto her heels.
“Hello, Honey. I’m a friend of your Mommy and Daddy’s.”
The child was friendly, forward, and well pronounced.
“Hi,” she put out her hand to shake Brenda’s. “I’m Grace. Are you Robyn’s Mommy?”
“Aren’t you just precious?” Brenda smiled. “I’m her Mommy’s sister,” she explained. Grace nodded.
“How do you know Robyn?” Brenda asked her.
“We go to school together!” her niece revealed.
“Well,” Brenda stood at full height once again. She made a face at Michelle. “How about that?”
“How about it?” Michelle repeated flatly. She took a deep breath, and tried to seem composed. “So,” she exhaled, “How’ve you been?”
Brenda could see now, exactly why Alex had hit her. She decided to bait her smug ex-best friend.
“Kevin told me she was a delightful little girl,” she said.
It worked.
“Excuse me?” Michelle asked, blinking. “What did you say? Who said what?”
“Kevin, Honey,” Brenda emphasized her words, “Your husband..."
