Last night on Nicole Bitchie I read that Vogue Italia is catching some heat for a recent spread titled "Haute Mess" that features white models in over-the-top ghetto fabulous fashions. All of the pictures were too busy for me to care, but then again I hardly ever care for fashions spreads.
The question of Is This Racist? isn't real to me in this context. First of all, fashion magazines are not for common people. That's not to say regular working women shouldn't buy and read them and get style inspiration. By all means, do you. I was just having this conversation with a jewelry designer over Sunday Brunch the other day. Fashion magazines are trade publications for people who work in fashion. You're not supposed to 'get it.' And truthfully, I don't know why you care.
But seriously, it's not racist. Let me tell you why. Bitches really do go over the top. There is black trash just like there is white trash. The thing about racism, and really any other offensive grievance people suffer, is that it's only real if you think it is. When people behave a certain way to me I call it whatever I choose to call it, despite whatever they intended it as. If you are a colored-folk and you take offense to it then it's racism to you. It's not racism to me. As long as people choose to see the world in terms of races and nationalities and religious affiliation and sexuality then these borders of separation will continue to exist. As long as some group of people looks to another group of people for permission or validation or some sort of allowance, respect, or payment of damages so to speak, then people will always feel short changed and diminished.
It's fucking fashion, bro. Also, look at the commerce of entertainment right now. Look at who's been cover girl on womens/fashion/entertainment publication after publication for months now? Of course the influence and inspiration would spread. So how are you mad? Somewhere in the hood, I guaranfuckingtee you, some broad has a skittles wrapper taped to her fucking wig. Drop it, and move on. How about you gather your righteous indignation and sign the petition to make the FBI and DOJ prosecute George Zimmerman for murdering 17 year-old Trayvon Martin. Because I'm pretty sure the lack of prosecution going on here is actually racist.
